If you read my last article and followed my suggestion, you kissed her (your wife, partner, lover or curious friend) and it was blissful. You lost yourself in the passion of a kiss. Losing yourself in any experience is hypnotic.

Let’s imagine I am your hypnotist:

The most powerful thing you can do in our session is to lose yourself, let go of conscious thought and listen to my voice, coaxing you into the deeper part of your mind that is rich with all your memories, quirks, habits, fears, inspiring messages and self-defeating beliefs. (It’s the latter I will help you whittle away).

When you emerge from hypnosis, you will probably experience a time warp (again, my Trekkies, not a literal wormhole where Picard could travel back and tell Kirk to buy a more stylish uniform).

How will you know our session was successful?

You throw your last pack of smokes away. You stop being bullied at work by that boss who is the opposite of Simon Roberts. You crave water, water, water (I’m repeating because a craving is a repetitive want) and every time you touch, watch, drink or think water, the tendency to ingest a Twinkie is washed away. You have a new spark of confidence that lifts you up. Your fear of driving, flying, test-taking, lovemaking, canines, spiders, heights, small spaces and gross zombie faces is gone. You find some peace in chaos, a light in the darkness. Your performance as an athlete improves. You manage pain with the power of your mind.

Simply stated, you change for the better.

Your thoughts, feelings, behaviors related to the problem change. Before hypnosis, you smoked a cigarette without thinking and now all the powerful suggestions are planted deeply, taking root in your subconscious mind. Imagine you have the fresh aroma of non-smokey hair, clothes, breath and car. Imagine the efficient breathing to get you up past the knees of Lady Liberty or even up your own stairs, the savings of thousands of dollars per year you had spent on dying sooner, the freedom of being out of the cross-hairs of the Nazi anti-smoker employer, the knowledge of how happy you have made the people who have begged you to quit.

That’s all possible when you harness the power of your mind.

Hypnosis is all about letting go. Do you remember the last time you were lost in an amazing experience? You zoned out. Your logical (conscious) mind was on hold. Time flew. You couldn’t believe an hour or two had passed? That’s hypnosis!

My clients have described it as being detached, deeply relaxed, drifting away, almost sleeping, so focused on my voice that other sounds were not a distraction. I hypnotized a college student whose cat crawled along my shoulders, curled up on her lap and remained there for the 45 minutes. Yes, I think the cat was hypnotized. No, I did not charge the client double. Many of my clients don’t want to “emerge” from hypnosis. They like the escape.

There are physical changes as well, like slow breathing, heavy eyes, tingling fingers, relaxed hands and feet, feeling molded to the chair or floating or detachment from physical body. Each person’s experience is unique because each person is unique.

The induction, the process that guides you to open your subconscious mind, will be tailored to you based on what helps you relax, what kind of induction will get you there and what words and rhythm are needed based on your issues.

Logical analytical people may need a stronger induction. Relaxing physically may be easy. Relaxing mentally may be more challenging, so I may need to use a different approach.

Here’s an example of an induction for a person who is not so analytical:

“You are more relaxed physically than you may have been in a long time. Now, I will help you relax mentally. Begin at the number 100 and slowly count backwards (outloud) until those numbers just fade away. You don’t see them clearly anymore, You don’t sense them. Start with the idea that you will allow them to fade away and with each number you say, you relax more. Deeper relaxed. By the time you reach 95 or 94, those numbers will just fade away so that the numbers following just won’t be there. Nod your head when that happens.”

It is no failure if my client counts all the way back to one. So far, no one has gotten into negative numbers. It means there is interruption by the conscious mind. The client may be analytical and need an induction that is more complex to cause the conscious mind to drift away. You know, counting sheep before bed is a kind of hypnotic exercise where the logical mind does this repetitive thing, gives up, drifts away and sleep happens.

A logical person may ask, “Why am I counting these sheep? Am I the shepherd? What if I lose count? I’m not a shepherd!”

Here’s an example of an induction for an analytical person:

“You are more relaxed physically than you may have been in a long time. Now, I will help you relax mentally. Your strong logical mind will drift away leaving your deeper subconscious mind open to all these positive suggestions. It’s OK to let that busy mind that thinks and analyzes all the time rest. Now, imagine you see the number 100 on your computer screen. Make the number 100 whatever color you want. Say the number 100 outloud. Allow it to fade. First, the color fades, then the lines fade until the number disappears from the screen. You see the number 99, say the number 99 outloud and slowly the color fades, the lines fade and it disappears from the screen. You see the number 98 and say the number 98 out loud and allow it to fade.” I talk to the client slowly and firmly, directing her to continue to count these numbers down and say the numbers while going deeper down as each number fades.

When the client is physically and mentally relaxed and the numbers have faded away, I begin to have them see, hear, smell, touch and sense a place that helps them go deeper into trance (meaning hypnotic state, not a zombie state where you emerge and realize you have eaten five of your best friends).

Positive suggestions are given to an open accepting subconscious mind. The induction, the suggestions, the emergence of my client varies in time, but the amazing thing is that most clients will experience a time warp. They may feel it was 10 minutes and be surprised it was much longer. This is a classic sign of having been hypnotized. Sense of time is lost.

Do you remember the last time you engaged in blissful hypnotic lovemaking and time was lost? OK, if you don’t remember, remedy that.

Suggestion: Engage (no, not like that you crazy Trekkies) in blissful, hypnotic lovemaking and you will naturally let go of that busy mind and just be.

If that is not going to happen, at least try for a very long, hot kiss, like in Nicole Conn’s “Elena Undone.” Hypnotic? Hell, yeah. Even if you just watch a kiss like that.

Next time, I’ll talk more on about happens after the session. How do you know if it worked? Do you need more sessions? What spells success? If problems continue, what could be done differently? Is the hypnotist for real? Should I call the one near Pittsburgh? That’s me. Until next time, relax and focus and kiss, long and with much passion.

Lemon sliced in halfBY JAN LEE

Hi! I’m back with more fascinating chatter about hypnosis. What could you expect if you were about to be hypnotized? Let’s pretend you are seeing me for hypnosis.

First, I would have discussed hypnosis with you (probably by phone) before the session to clarify what it is, demystify it and extol its benefits.

I would begin our session by getting to know who you are and what your issues are. It matters that you are comfortable with me, have some basic trust and believe hypnosis will work.

When you believe in it, you increase the likelihood of success.

I would do suggestibility testing to help me assess how receptive you are and how best to hypnotize you. Don’t get freaked out by the word “testing.” This is not a pass-fail thing. It’s simply a way to know what induction method best suits you. Induction is the process of accessing your deeper mind (subconscious).

TRY THIS
(Read all the instructions first and then follow them)

  1. Close your eyes (unless you’re driving, piloting a plane, operating a forklift or a chainsaw).
  2. Imagine a lemon on a cutting board in front of you. It’s bright yellow with thick skin. See
yourself slicing it into wedges. The juice is running onto the cutting board. The citrus scent is strong!
  3. Imagine, that you pick up one of the wedges and bring it close to your nose. Isn’t that smell refreshing?
  4. Now, bite into that wedge. Uh, it’s so sour. The juice runs over your tongue and teeth. It makes you cringe.
  5. Open your eyes.Do you notice you are salivating?Even a small amount means you are reacting physiologically to your thoughts. The lemon is not real, yet your mind is so powerful and causes a change in you, a reaction.

Most people salivate. If you don’t, try again.

Relax, close your eyes and use your great imagination. Let go. When you really let go and use your imagination, you will salivate.

This is one of many suggestibility tests to see how receptive a client is.

After I test you, I’d begin the actual induction.

It goes something like this: “Get comfortable. Relax. It would be better if your legs are uncrossed and your feet are flat on the floor. Put your hands on your lap. Take a deep breath. This is your time. No one needs or wants anything from you. Let go. That’s right just let go.

Check out my next article. I’ll talk more on induction, what you may experience while hypnotized and after (everyone is different) and how hypnosis will help you.

Until next time, relax and focus.

Woman under self hypnosisBY JAN LEE,

What is hypnosis?

As a certified hypnotist, I’m asked this question all the time. I love analogies, so here’s my answer:

Imagine an eight-lane highway. The cars, buses, and trucks are beeping, swerving in and out, sucking you in, making you shout (curse, maybe even gesture). It’s chaos and it’s nasty to navigate.

That eight-lane highway is your conscious mind. It’s busy, overworked, overwhelmed and quite critical.

You have a destination you want to get to, a peaceful place, maybe a park, a quiet restaurant or the beach (if you are not in Pittsburgh). That destination is your subconscious mind. It is receptive, more peaceful and non-critical. It happens to be where all your life experiences are, as well as your habits, quirks, dreams, beliefs and automatic behaviors.

Now, imagine there’s a bypass around this eight-lane highway or your busy conscious mind.

You’d take it, wouldn’t you?

Yes, of course you would!

The bypass is hypnosis. It’s a way around your conscious mind to your destination, your subconscious mind.

A hypnotist will guide you into this relaxed but focused state and give you positive suggestions for the changes you want to make. Your subconscious mind will accept these. You and your hypnotist are a team working together to rewire your mind with positive thoughts, healthy habits and behaviors.

Hypnosis is not voodoo or magic. It’s not mind control. It is a natural process. It’s a powerful tool for health.

We have all been hypnotized. If you doubt this, think of the last time you were:

  • About to drift off to sleep
  • About to just awaken
  • Unable to recall the actual drive into work because it is automatic
  • Lost in a great book, movie or song
  • Zoned out watching or playing your favorite sport or video game
  • Daydreaming at school or work
  • Making love and time stopped

These are hypnotic states. The logical mind drifts away and the deeper mind is engaged and accepting.

Now, you know what hypnosis is.

How is it done? What does it feel like? How can it help? Who is Jan Lee?

Uh, well, I’m Jan Lee. No, I am not Chinese, but I love Chinese food and respect Chinese medicine.

I’m a 52-year-old mom to Brady, my 17-year-old football-player-turned-rapper son. I’m a certified hypnotist and psych nurse. I am in business and do sessions in clients’ homes / businesses or via phone / skype (724-884-3307 / mesmereyes2). I love, love women, one particularly for the last 4 years and to infinity (not sure about beyond).

I am passionate about hypnosis. This is an incredible way we can use our minds.

As for other questions, I’ll answer those in the next article.

Meanwhile, relax and focus.
