Twitter and smart career decisions usually don’t mix.

Remember that public relations executive who lost her job over a racist tweet she made just before going on vacation? By the time her plane landed, she was out of a job.

And hers isn’t the only horror story. People have lost jobs because they’ve tweeted everything from insensitive jokes to complaints about a potential employer to — gulp! — expletives from a corporate account, assuming it was a personal one.

The map highlights hate speech hotspots.

A map created by geography students at Humboldt State University in California looks at more than 150,000 geocoded tweets (tweets that say where the user is located) between June 2012 and April 2013, sorting for those that contain a racist, homophobic or anti-disability word. The researchers then decided whether or not the tweet was using the word in a hateful way. A majority of hateful tweets seem to come from smaller towns and more rural areas. Some of the biggest spots for homophobic tweets are along the border of Oklahoma and Texas. There are a lot more racist tweets coming out of an area in the middle of North Dakota than in the larger city of Fargo, for example. Homophobic tweets have a wider spread across the nation than racist ones, which are coming from the southeastern portion of the country more than anywhere else.

The interactive map lets you zoom as far as the county level on the map to pinpoint which counties across the U.S. wrote the most hateful tweets. You can look at all hateful tweets, tweets by category, or just at specific words.

The National Football League has set a disappointing standard by refusing to implement its conduct policy when a player blatantly engages in public displays of homophobia. Cleveland Browns linebacker Tank Carder recently used Twitter to call a fan a “faggot” and further explain that, “I don’t agree with being gay or lesbian at all, but saying faggot doesn’t make me a homophobe.”

The Browns responded by saying they do not condone such comments and that they “have spoken with Tank and have made this very clear to him.” In his “apology,” he explained that he is “sorry if you were offended.” He also tried to explain that he thought the person he called a faggot “was bashing team sports. big misunderstanding.” Carder has done nothing else to rectify his offensive remarks, and now the NFL is not doing anything about it either.

Canadian university officials say they hope their new, web-based initiative will act as a “social mirror” reflecting the “pervasive and damaging” issue of casual homophobia on the Internet.

The site, called NoHomophobes.com, reportedly measures the number of instances several commonly-used anti-gay terms — including “faggot” and “dyke” — are used daily, weekly and yearly on Twitter. The tally of numbers is indeed staggering: for instance, the term “so gay” was mentioned in a total of 800,000 tweets since July, though the most common was undoubtedly “faggot” (used 2.4 million times in the Twittersphere), according to the site.

When Tumblrs with lesbian themes began to crop up, the women behind the Tumblr monikers Suicide Blonde and Bohemea began by posting lesbian-related art and photos, as well as opinions on fashion, film, television, music, and politics, then came to assume a vital role in the community — giving sage advice to readers, mostly girls and women, who needed to know that they are not alone.
