Tickets are now available for 2014′s Out at Wrigley, the largest annual LGBT sporting event in the country. This year’s game is set for Saturday, July 12, when the Chicago Cubs take on the Atlanta Braves in their now-100-year-old ballpark.

Last year’s Out at Wrigley was paired with the induction ceremony for the latest project of MTM Chicago’s Bill Gubrud, the driving force behind Out at Wrigley, and Jackie Weinberg of Supergurl Images: The National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame (NGLSHOF). The new organization, which seeks to recognize and preserve the history of individuals and organizations whose achievements have advanced sports and athletics for the LGBT community while also providing outreach and education to the sporting world to help make it a more welcoming and safe space for LGBT youth, inducted 26 members into its inaugural class in August 2013.

A federal court in Illinois ruled on Friday gay couples can marry immediately in the Chicago-area Cook County without waiting for the marriage equality law to take effect in June. Meanwhile, LGBT advocates behind the lawsuit are interpreting the decision to mean clerks across the state should begin granting marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

“There is no reason to delay further when no opposition has been presented to this Court and committed gay and lesbian couples have already suffered from the denial of their fundamental right to marry,” U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman, an Obama appointee, writes.

Although Gov. Pat Quinn signed into law a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in Illinois, the measure won’t take effect until June.

Minnesota gay marriage

Minneapolis’ Mayor R.T. Rybak took a trip to Chicago to steal all their gays. Rybak’s office has cooked up a new ad campaign, “I Want to Marry You in Minneapolis,” encouraging Illinois residents to make the short trip across the state border to get hitched. This year, Minnesota became the thirteenth US state to legalize same-sex marriage, and Mayor Rybak presided over the wedding of Minneapolis police chief Janeé Harteau just a few weeks ago. Rather than call a press conference in his own town, Rybak bounced over to Chicago to unveil the campaign in Rahm Emanuel’s own backyard.

“Chicago is my kind of town, but it’s a second city in human rights,” Rybak told reporters. “I hope the day comes [when] all Illinoisans can marry—but until that day comes, I’m here to steal your business.” Ouch. A March study by UCLA’s Williams Institute estimated that Illinois’ economy could pick up an extra $100 million (which would yield about $8.5 million in tax revenues for the cash-strapped state) if same-sex marriage became the law of the land.

ChicagoBY KELSY CHAUVIN

It is a delicious city, Chicago: Just ask anyone which food the Windy City is most celebrated for and they’ll come up with deep-dish pizza and hot dogs. Never mind that the pizza came from Italy and hot dogs from Coney Island—it is the mighty appetite of Chicagoans that brought them both to the next level of decadence. And this town has many more scrumptious dishes to tempt the willing traveler.

One of the top culinary destinations of late belongs to Top Chef Season 4 winner (and cutie pie) Stephanie Izard. Open since 2010, Girl and the Goat  is part of a vibrant restaurant scene situated in and among the converted warehouses of the West Loop. Izard’s lovely, preserved-industrial vibe creates a luscious space where diners come to be dazzled by her innovative fare. Like most of today’s top restaurants, the Goat uses simple, fresh, seasonal ingredients, and magically transforms them into many-flavored explosions—think roasted cauliflower with pickled peppers, pine nuts, and mint, or Squash Blossom Rangoon: crab, chive yogurt, and almonds. Although getting a table may take a spell, sipping on the Goat’s outstanding cocktails will inspire patience.

A global and historical first, the Legacy Walk will celebrate the lives and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people to world history and culture. This outdoor museum will be dedicated in Chicago along a half-mile stretch of the “Northalsted Corridor” — the heart of the city’s diverse LGBT population.

On October 11, 2012 — the 25th anniversary of “National Coming-Out Day” — the first 18 solid cast bronze plaques will be affixed to the celebrated “Rainbow Pylons” on the Northalsted Streetscape.
