Tickets are now available for 2014′s Out at Wrigley, the largest annual LGBT sporting event in the country. This year’s game is set for Saturday, July 12, when the Chicago Cubs take on the Atlanta Braves in their now-100-year-old ballpark.

Last year’s Out at Wrigley was paired with the induction ceremony for the latest project of MTM Chicago’s Bill Gubrud, the driving force behind Out at Wrigley, and Jackie Weinberg of Supergurl Images: The National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame (NGLSHOF). The new organization, which seeks to recognize and preserve the history of individuals and organizations whose achievements have advanced sports and athletics for the LGBT community while also providing outreach and education to the sporting world to help make it a more welcoming and safe space for LGBT youth, inducted 26 members into its inaugural class in August 2013.

It won’t just be music. The OUT Project has teamed up with One More Lesbian and Tello Films to showcase a myriad of web series, presented at an event titled, “Main Screen.”

Eboné Bell practices what she preaches.  In a few short minutes of chatting, Bell treats me, a stranger, like a friend.  “Are you coming to the party this Saturday?” she asks casually, not yet realizing that I’m several hundred miles away.

I so wish! Alas, I have Lesbian.com pieces to work on, another job, and a very controlling cat who would be supremely unhappy if I dashed off to this extremely exciting, big news, launch party for the absolutely fantastic Tagg Magazine in Washington, DC.

Bell is the driving spirit behind Tagg, the DC area’s brand spankin’ new bent ladies’ magazine.  Made for women, by women, Tagg aims to be smart, savvy, and majorly community oriented.   In fact, community and unity are the dominant themes of our whole conversation, and Bell’s amicable energy make it seem very real: Tagg doesn’t just aim to bring women together.  Tagg will bring women together.

Tagg launched in the beginning of  September with a fall issue featuring Project Runway’s Alicia Hardesty, but this coming weekend is the primo, grand celebration of its emergence into the DC/DelMarVa scene.  Bell and her business partner have teamed up with the ladies of LURe, responsible for some big DC girl parties, to host an official launch at the legendary Cobalt.  From 9p.m. to 10p.m. at Level One, Tagg will give the VIPs who have supported the magazine in its infancy some love with a swanky cocktail hour thank you.  Upstairs, from 10p.m. to 3 a.m., there will be dancing, drinking, “TAGGing” and a wild good time.  The locally legendary Destruction Dancers will perform a special routine on stage.  A dance contest will grant the best dancer in the crowd a $200 prize.  Raffle boys and girls will cruise the room, offering up tickets to try your luck for gift certificates, Washington Wizards seats, and an authentically signed poster and CD donated by Nicki Minaj, herself.

You’ve been TAGGed!

Bell has built Tagg from the ground up, her team consisting of herself, her business partner, and the numerous supporters and contributors who have graciously offered their creativity and skills to the project.  They, too, felt there was something missing in the women’s community in the DC area, and have enthusiastically responded to Bell’s call to bridge the gap.  From the constantly updated, well-designed website focusing on local events, lifestyle pieces, and LBT-relevant news, to the bi-monthly, full color, glossy print issues of Tagg, to the ongoing parties throughout the area, it is all intended to reach and unite the community.  “We want  […] everyone from the young professionals to the more established women who are living out in the ‘burbs, single family homes all the way out in […] Virginia or Maryland …we really want to make sure that this magazine speaks to them and everyone in between.  We want to make it a people magazine, a local lesbian publication.  We want to have local community.”

And while it is a lesbian publication, it’s not rigidly exclusive.  Bell is not interested in drawing divisions based on gender or the nuances of personal identity and limiting the reach of community and interpersonal connections.  A transguy gets “TAGGed” in one of their promo videos.  Bell never leaves out bisexual women when referencing Tagg’s readers or audience.  A well-known trans-rights activist, a transwoman, is quoted in their “That’s What She Said” feature.  Tagg is voicing from the start that community is bigger and better when that community is welcoming.

“It isn’t about me or one other person,” Bell says.  “How often can we have 600+ women in one space to network, connect, grow friendships, meet your future wife — you never know!  We’re bringing everyone together and feeling like this is ours, that we finally have something in this community.”

Check out Tagg online: http://www.taggmagazine.com.

Tagg Magazine’s Official Launch Party will take place Saturday, October 20, at Cobalt, 1639 R St NW, Washington DC.  The event will be hosted by the ladies of LURe/Bare, 10 pm to close with DJ Rosie.

Think back to a few weeks ago when all of America was glued to their television screens watching Megan Rapinoe advance the ball down the field, lithely dodging Team Japan’s defense. You were sitting there wishing you could be magically transported to London for just one tiny moment.  This weekend was your chance to have even more fun than that – Seattle’s 22nd annual Festival of the Babes – “a soccer tournament for lesbians and those willing to be mistaken for one,” which took place over Labor Day weekend at Maplewood Playfield.

This year 14 teams from far-off lands such as Portland, Ore.,  and Vancouver, B.C. have converged on Seattle to celebrate soccer, lesbians and sportsmanship. The team that most exemplifies the spirit of “FOB-liness- teach(ing) us all the best way to capture that lightness of spirit in the midst of our competitive soccer obsession” will take home the FOB Team Spirit Award.

Girls are making their mark on Southern Decadence. Once a sinful week long party for gay boys started more than 40 years ago, four years ago the girls busted into the party with Dykeadence.

Dykeadence is a five daylong celebration, August 30 – September 2, with dance and pool parties, burlesque shows and erotic readings, and more culminating joining in the annual Southern Decadence Parade through the French Quarter in New Orleans during Labor Day weekend.

Seed of passion

The grassroots event is turning into a grass fire since it started four years ago with a small group of women simply seeking to join in on the Southern Decadence party and parade.

Southern Decadence started as a farewell fiesta for a friend who was moving away from the Big Easy in the late 1960s that became an annual event. The party attracts more than 100,000 party goers annually in recent years, says Robert “Bobby” Revere, one of the organizers and promoters of the party, citing information from the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Tired of being on the fringe of the event, queer women developed their own complementary party that has rapidly grown from 300 women attending the first parties in 2009 to an estimated 1,500 last year, says Sara Pic, one of the founding Dykeadence committee members.

Last year was significant, it was the first year Dykeadence broke above the even mark by a few hundred dollars with Queerlesque! raking in $1,500 that covered production costs of the event with a little left over. Nearly all of Dykeadence events are open to the public for free. Organizers marked the party’s growth by incorporating and beginning plans for a foundation to support local organizations, Sara, a native queer woman of New Orleans, says.

Sinful delights

Organizers anticipate this year’s event to attract queer women travelers and their friends from New York to San Francisco, as well as from all over the South to hang out by the pool at the Get it Wet!, get hot and bothered at the Faster Pussycat Kinky Costume party, and work up a sweat at GrrlSpot’sFleurt.

Flurt is produced by Christine Johnson, director of GrrlSpot, New Orleans biggest women’s monthly parties.

The weekend’s events also include Queerlesque!, a burlesque show, erotic readings from some of New Orlean’s steamiest authors, social mixers and more leading up to the parade.

“I’m very excited about Dykeadence this year,” says Christine, who is also one of Dykeadence’s core committee members, in a June 13 new release announcing the event. “This year, we’re taking out all the stops.”

“It’s going to be a weekend filled with ‘just let yourself go,’” adds Sara. “It will definitely be memory making.”

Don’t miss out on one debaucherous moment. Sign up to get your Dykeadence updates while they are still hot.

Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that Queerlesque! made $15,000. The correct amount was $1,500 covering the production costs and leaving only a few hundred dollars left over to help produce next year’s event.

Showing pride in Oakland, two producers kick off Oakland Pride weekend with the launch of fiveTEN, a host of events throughout the weekend, starting Friday, August 31 and ending with a dance party on Sunday, September 2, that aim to go beyond LGBT Pride celebrating the East Bay city.

Christine, a 30-something freshly minted Oakland resident arrived in the Bay Area from her home state of Texas four and a half years ago, and began promoting parties throughout the Bay Area forming Eden Pride Events, formerly Movement Productions/Eden in the Bay. Her co-producer of the weekend even is Chaney Turner, a 32-year old Oakland native who owns SocialLife, a promotion and event production company in Oakland.
