The Salvation Army is one of the most recognized charities in the United States. What a lot of people, myself included until recently, do not realize is that the SA actively and institutionally works against people in the LGBTQ community. For this self styled “evangelical part of the universal Christian Church,” the homophobia is literally written into its handbook. For its position statement on LGBTQ individuals, “The Salvation Army believes […] that Christians whose sexual orientation is primarily or exclusively same-sex are called upon to embrace celibacy as a way of life.”

Mark Oppenheimer wrote a 2011 story for the New York Times about the SA turning away people because they are gay. While the SA has denied this, we’ve also seen them threatening to leave New York City altogether in 2004 if they were “forced” to abide by the law of requiring health benefits for employees’ same-sex partners. In 2012, we heard SA media relations official Major Andrew Craibe imply on national radio that gays should be put to death. When shopping, remember how you choose to spend (and donate) your money shows support for that organization; just make sure you’re supporting the right cause. Skip the red buckets and support an inclusive, non-discriminatory organization that truly wants to help everyone that comes through its doors.

Women running in a raceBY SUSAN JOHNSTON

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, the Turkey Trot — a race that’s held across the country leading up to the holiday — is a great way to work off some of that pumpkin pie you’ve been indulging in while also raising money for a worthy cause.

But when you pit running up to 26 miles against begging friends, family and Facebook contacts to sponsor you, the feat of physical endurance almost seems easier than asking for money.

Why is it that the issue of breast cancer seems to attract some types whose morals are less than stellar? Earlier this year, we learned that the Susan G. Komen Foundation had decided to eliminate funding of Planned Parenthood chapters who help provide breast exams.

Now comes news that ‘Boobies Rock!,’ a for-profit business that purports to raise funds for “breast-cancer awareness” in Chicago and around the U.S., has been taking in plenty of money, but not funneling those funds to the charities it claimed to benefit.

Everyone can recall the site of a red bucket and the sound of a bell outside of their supermarket, essentially marking the beginning of the Christmas season. However, the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign has recently made headlines again as LGBT rights advocates urge holiday shoppers to stop donating to the organization.

America’s Blog has encouraged LGBT supporters to donate downloadable “vouchers” to the bell ringers (view below), instead of money, to show that “bigotry is not a Christmas value.” The voucher states that as a supporter of the LGBT community, “I will not donate” to a discriminatory organization, such as the Salvation Army.

The Ruth Ellis Center hosted its second annual benefit Voices with special celebrity guest Wanda Sykes on September 20. Voices, held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD), celebrates the resilience of the more than 4,000 homeless, runaway and at-risk lesbian, gay, bi-attractional, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth the Ruth Ellis Center serves annually.

The event also included two major announcements: this year’s recipients of the Ruth’s Angels Award, and Sykes’ surprise announcement that she had donated $15,000 to the Ruth Ellis Center, matching a $15,000 grant announced by PNC Bank earlier in the evening.

The Sweet Cookbook benefiting the Cozumel Humane SocietyLesbian.com, July 27, 2012

Things are really cooking at Sweet. The lesbian luxury excursion company, known for their eco-friendly and community service-based travel, announced they are now accepting pre-orders for “The Sweet Cookbook” to benefit the Cozumel Humane Society (CHS).

The full-color, book bound volume features more than 125 recipes donated by Sweet’s patrons and their friends across the U.S. and Canada and includes a variety of appetizers, beverages, desserts, entrees, salads and side dishes, as well as a few pet-friendly surprises.

Several lesbian celebrities participated in the project, with Edie Carey, Catie Curtis, Traci Dinwiddie, Fortune Feimster, Melissa Ferrick, Chef Josie, Gabrielle Lindau, Bridget McManus, Jennie McNulty, Lori Michaels, Jackie Monahan and Suzanne Westenhoefer all donating recipes for the cause.

Pre-orders are now being accepted through Sweet’s online store and cookbooks will be shipped in fall 2012. All net proceeds from sales will be donated to CHS.

“This was a real labor of love by our Sweeties,” shared Sweet co-founder and CEO Shannon Wentworth. “I continue to be amazed by the generosity and creativity of our travelers in finding ways to serve the global community.”

Sweet first established a relationship with the Cozumel Humane Society during a September 2010 visit and plans to volunteer their services during a return trip in September 2012.

“We’ll also present a check to CHS based on pre-sales of ‘The Sweet Cookbook’ so that our furry friends may continue to be well fed and cared for long after we’ve departed,” explained Wenworth.
