Today, the National Center for Lesbian Rights joins more than 50 other LGBTQ organizations calling for unity and an end to hate and discrimination following the June 12, 2016 shooting at an Orlando, Florida LGBT bar that left 49 people dead and more than 50 seriously injured.
Joint Statement
lgbt-pride-flag
We the undersigned organizations working on the front lines of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) movement share in the profound grief for those who were killed and many more who were wounded during Latin Night at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Their lives were lost or forever altered in this devastating act of violence targeting LGBTQ people. Our hearts go out to all the family and friends touched by this horrific act. We know their lives will never be the same again.
This national tragedy happened against the backdrop of anti-LGBTQ legislation sweeping this country and we must not forget that in this time of grief. Unity and organized response in the face of hatred is what we owe the fallen and the grieving. Collective resolve across national, racial and political lines will be required to turn the tide against anti-LGBTQ violence. Our response to this horrific act, committed by one individual, will have deep impact on Muslim communities in this country and around the world. We as an intersectional movement cannot allow anti-Muslim sentiment to be the focal point as it distracts from the larger issue, which is the epidemic of violence that LGBTQ people, including those in the Muslim community, are facing in this country.
The animus and violence toward LGBTQ people is not news to our community. It is our history, and it is our reality. In 1973, 32 LGBTQ people died in an arson fire at an LGBTQ Upstairs Lounge in New Orleans. More than forty years later, similar acts of anti-LGBTQ violence are commonplace. Crimes motivated by bias due to sexual orientation and gender identity were the second largest set of hate crimes documented by the FBI in 2015 (over 20%). Murders and violence against transgender people globally have taken more than 2000 lives over the last 9 years. Bias crimes against US immigrant populations, which include significant numbers of LGBTQ people, have increased over the past decade as anti-immigrant rhetoric has escalated.
For those of us who carry multiple marginalized identities, the impact of this violence and discrimination has even more severe consequences. These intersectional identities and their ramifications are apparent at every level in the Orlando tragedy – which disproportionately affected Latino members of our communities, and has xenophobic consequences that threaten LGBTQ Muslims. According to the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP), there were 24 reports of hate violence related homicides in 2015, and 62% of those victims were LGBTQ people of color. Transgender and gender nonconforming people made up 67% of the homicides, the majority of whom were transgender women of color. The violence against transgender and gender nonconforming people has continued into 2016 with 13 reported individual homicides this year alone. NCAVP research on hate violence shows that LGBTQ people experience violence not only by strangers, but also in their everyday environments by employers, coworkers, landlords and neighbors. The Orlando shooting is simply an extreme instance of the kind of violence that LGBTQ people encounter every day.
As LGBTQ people who lived through the AIDS crisis, we know what it looks like and feels like to be scapegoated and isolated in the midst of a crisis that actually requires solidarity, empathy and collaboration from all quarters. We appeal to all in our movement and all who support us to band together in rejecting hatred and violence in all its shape shifting forms. Let us stand united as a diverse LGBTQ community of many faiths, colors, nationalities and backgrounds.

RFWRainbow Fashion Week is a yearly event where LGBT designers and brands showcase their latest collections on the runway in NYC. NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio has sanctioned the event, “An official New York City Pre-Pride Fashion Event.” In it’s third year, the event is set to take place June 17 through the 26, 2016- just in time to coincide with Pride.

Attendees at the 3rd annual Rainbow Fashion Week will be treated to events such as, “Kids who Tech,” “Fashion for the Cure,” and a pet fashion show. The event is also committed to going green and discussing important social issues alongside sick fashions.

E. Jaguard (Jag) Beckford, founder and producer of Rainbow Fashion Week. In 2013, Jag launched Jaguar and Company Clothier where she presently designs “male identified” clothing for women. We chatted with Jag to discuss how Rainbow Fashion Week came into being and what inspires her to create.

Jag- Producer of Rainbow Fashion Week

Jag- Producer of Rainbow Fashion Week

How did you come up with the idea for Rainbow Fashion Week?

After launching my clothing line “JagandCo” in 2013 for the gender binary, gender fluid, aggressive women such as myself, I realized that most of the “talent” is hidden behind the scenes. Wouldn’t it be great to have a Fashion Week kicking off pride in New York City that highlighted all of those fashion professionals that help create the finished work of art that struts the runway.

You started out as an entertainment attorney, how did you make the leap from law to fashion with your clothing company, Jaguar and Company Clothier?

Not a leap, more like a baby step. I actually supported myself designing clothes in the 90s. I would custom design tees, jeans, denim jackets, paint leather, make cool hats and jewelry and raised enough money to drive my 1967 red mustang to law school. My wares sold like hot cakes from my table in the student union.

What is it that you love about fashion?

The Art. Fashion is “Art.” So our tag line for Rainbow Fashion Week is “The Art of Fashion. I see artistry in the make-up composition. I watch many videos of men transforming themselves into beautiful women.  I see photos of amazing hair, wigs and weaves sewn on a head and transform into magic. I watch the lighting designer, strategically place halogen lights, against soft bulbs and create inviting mystical spaces.  I see designers breathe life into sketches.  It’s the magic of the art of fashion that has me so mesmerized.

Saturday14What inspires your work?

Almost anything can inspire me. I once was transferring trains in New York at 14th Street and they have Alice and Wonderland Statutes. I designed a few bowties, took then back to the station and did a mini photo shoot. I am also inspired by stories. I receive stories from a cop in Camden, New Jersey, who just wished for an opportunity to try walking a runway. She stated she felt in her 30 something years, she was at her best and just needed the world to see it. I also received a FB message from a young girl in London, who stated she was in a play called the “Young Prince” and it took her to move to the UK to be able to find herself, but she thanked us for creating spaces for the average Joe to be able to walk the runway, out and proud. I’m also inspired by a straight woman, seeing how I put my suits together, the stitching, the beautiful pattern compliments and have them ask me if I could help their husband.  All of these things inspire me.

What celebrities would you love to see wearing Jaguar and Company clothes?

Ellen [DeGeneres]. I know I could dress and style the hell out of Ellen.

If I ran into you on a typical day in the life of Jag, what would you be wearing?

Probably my signature Jag and Co snapback cap with gold cats and spikes, diaper pants, rockin’ my shell toe adidas with fly “lace-locks” or my paper-boi trousers, with some argyle socks and saddle buck shoes.

Tell me your favorite story from last year’s Rainbow Fashion Week.

Watching two double mastectomy breast cancer survivors, walking the runway in our show called; “Inside the Celebrity Closet” which addressed the issue of body dysmorphia. Very touching to watch that victory walk.

Rainbow Fashion Week is ‘carbon neutral’ – meaning achieving a green event having a carbon footprint of zero. Why was that an important goal for you?

RFWNY has recently been invited to present our Fashion show in Nepal. This invitation came after attending my second meeting with the Water Keeprs Alliance where I learned that the textile industry is the 2nd largest polluters of our global water system. I went home that night and rewrote our mission statement to do our part of making a change.  His Holiness stated that when looking to do your part, work within the industry that you do your best work in.  I felt that it was our responsibility to make whatever changes we could.

This year we will reduce our energy consumption by 1/3 through the usage of solar 12 kilowatt generators and 300-watt panels. Our Rainbow Pet Fashion Show has a petition to have the City of New York, create the very first Dog Waste Composting Bins on every other corner in the City. Because it causes disease and can be turned into fertilizer for our tree beds and parks system. We will have biodegradable serving plates and utensils, less bottled water and for many of our venue a recycling system in place, rather than the required “take everything with you in black bags and dump in the trash.”

So it is important that all of us teach one another how to “just do it.”

DSC_0659

What cutting edge fashion trends can we expect to see at the event?

Fashion is recycled as with everything going back in time very 20-30 years, so nothing is actually new.  Even when you look at technology fashion, ahhh it’s actually early “StarTrek” episode costuming. But, this year I am going for the plaids, stylish, bold handsome patterned plaids in my “Paper Boi” styled trouser short suits. We will also have some bold pieces made by Bravo TV Star Andre Sorriano, who is going to be working on re-purposed products donated by Delta Airlines. We are going to have some interesting works from “PrettyinPink” who has taken Hollywood by storm with her “Pussy Power” garments.

Comedian Dana Goldberg is set to headline at Seattle Women’s Pride this June. Goldberg is a highly acclaimed comedian, who has shared the a stage with President Barack Obama, Portia DeGeneres, Lady Gaga, Jane Lynch, Kathy Griffin and many more. She has also been named one of CURVE Magazine’s top five funniest lesbian comedians in America. In addition to being incredibly funny, Goldberg also gives back to the community- frequently performing at fundraisers for HIV/AIDS and LGBT awareness.

Goldberg is a natural fit to headline at Seattle Women’s Pride. “Dana is a hoot! We absolutely love her, and she is a good friend,” said Seattle Women’s Pride founder and producer Sarah Toce. “We’re so glad she accepted our offer to come out and play this Pride.”

We sat down with Goldberg to discuss her upcoming performance at Seattle Women’s Pride, what to do when you run into an ex at Pride and her best Pride memory.

How do comedians celebrate pride?

Well, I can’t speak for all of us, but I day drink and make poor life choices.  Kidding…sorta. Usually we’re on stage entertaining the masses with a lot of drunk screaming sunburned proud gays in the audience. I actually really enjoy going to the parades and having an adult beverage or two with some friends. I don’t work a lot of the pride festivals so I’m excited to headline Seattle Women’s Pride this year.

How did you get involved with Seattle Women’s Pride?

Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to build a relationship with Sarah Toce, the creator and producer of the event. I’ve been performing once a year in Seattle at Theater Off Jackson to an awesome sold out crowd, so I’m excited to bring my long show to the pride stage for the ladies. It’s going to be a fantastic weekend.

If you’re at Seattle Women’s Pride and you see your ex-girlfriend. What should you do?

Assuming you aren’t actually there with her? You know we’re all friends six months later. If it was a good break up, say hi, visit, you might even make out after a couple of dances and some vodka. If it was a bad breakup, just turn around and walk the other direction. No one needs that kinda drama at pride. Be smart ladies *cue shooting star* The more you know.

What advice would you give to people looking to hook up at Pride?

Make sure the girl is single! Other than that, just be careful of still photography. That shit will end up on Facebook before the night is over.

Tell me your favorite Pride memory.

I had the pleasure of marching in San Francisco’s Pride parade a couple of years ago and there was a sweet male couple in front of me holding hands with a sign that read “47 years together…and finally legally married.” It really puts things into perspective what the LGBT community has accomplished over the years, and now Pride is more of a reason to celebrate those accomplishments…while day drinking! Unfortunately, that couple is never the one who is featured on the front page of the newspaper the next day. It’s always someone in ass chaps with no pants wearing a rainbow boa in 6 inch heels and I’m like, “Is that my English professor?!”

Seattle Women’s Pride is back for a third gay-tastic year. Mark your calendar for Saturday, June 18, 2016. Taking place at the Q nightclub, queer ladies and bois can expect to dance, laugh and celebrate pride with members of the WNBA’s Seattle Storm and comedian Dana Goldberg. Eastside Women’s Health, which is dedicated to providing all women with a safe space to receive quality healthcare, is co-presenting the event this year. NYC’s GO Magazine will also head west to celebrate.

Sarah Toce- you might know her from the popular online newspaper, The Seattle Lesbian– is the founder and producer of Seattle Women’s Pride.

How did Seattle Women’s Pride start?

It occurred to me that there were quite a few parties for men during the Seattle Pride season, but not really anything geared specifically toward women – other than dance parties. What about the rest of us? Being the founder/publisher of The Seattle Lesbian, Seattle’s only lesbian news source, I knew I had to step up to the plate.

I called on some friends – The Voice‘s Vicci Martinez, Washington State Supreme Court Justice Mary Yu, transgender activist Marsha Botzer, Seattle singer/songwriter Jack Mozie, and others – and the inaugural Seattle Women’s Pride sold out in less than a month from planning to execution. That’s when we knew there was a real thirst for this type of women’s Pride event in Seattle.

This will be The Seattle Lesbian’s third year producing Seattle Women’s Pride and it’s only getting better with each passing year. We’ve sold out each time and we have every reason to believe we’ll do it again this year.

How has the event evolved over the last few years?

We completely outgrew our initial location and, in the second year, chose to relocate to a 12,000 sq. ft. venue in order to accommodate all of our guests. Our talented lineup keeps expanding – Vicci Martinez, Julie Goldman and now, this year, Dana Goldberg – have all headlined our event. We’ve increased staff size and are working with Eastside Women’s Health Center this year to secure sponsorship opportunities with likeminded brands and companies. Seattle Women’s Pride is quickly becoming a staple in Seattle’s Pride Month tapestry.

What surprises do you have up your sleeve to make 2016 the best pride so far?

If I told you, they wouldn’t be surprises!

We have some wonderful sponsors this year whose aim is to make Seattle Women’s Pride 2016 the most memorable yet, so stay tuned!

The landscape of the queer community is constantly evolving. Generation Z is more likely to label as queer than any other generation, at the same time, lesbian bars and queer spaces have been closing. What role do you think Pride will play in queer people’s lives as queer becomes more mainstream?

Pride is a celebration of who we are as a people, as a community – but also serves as a moment to stop and reflect at how far we’ve come – and how far we have yet to go. Regardless of how we identify ourselves individually, Pride is about celebrating how much we have achieved – together.

Seattle Women’s Pride takes it a step further. We’re not only celebrating our LGBTQ+ community, we’re also celebrating who we are as women in that community. This is a great moment to point out that everyone is welcome to attend Seattle Women’s Pride (as long as you’re over 21).

What is your favorite Pride memory?

I had just come out and was living in New York City when then-Sen. Hillary Clinton was walking near Christopher Street – right in the middle of the New York City Pride Parade. I literally came out of Duane Reade and bumped into her Secret Service detail – and they allowed me to take a picture. Imagine that – completely by accident. Not sure what can top that one!

Etheridge releases “Take My Number”

On Tuesday Melissa Etheridge released the debut single from her upcoming “This is ME” album. “Take My Number” is the first song off Etheridge’s much anticipated LP, expected to drop on September 30.

You can purchase the new song on iTunes and watch the official live video below.

Lesbian couple attacked after San Francisco Pride event

Police are investigating an attack on a lesbian couple in San Francisco in which the women were beaten and kicked by as many as six men.

Jennifer and Jakki, who requested that their last names not be released, were returning from a Pride event last Saturday evening when a group of men shouted a homophobic slur before initiating the attack on Jennifer.

The frightening ordeal left Jennifer with a concussion, bruises and lacerations while Jakki, who jumped in to try to protect her partner, suffered a broken wrist.

The couple speaks with a local news station in the video below.

Swedish ice hockey team shows support for LGBT rights

An ice hockey team in Kiruna, Sweden, announced that its players will don rainbow-colored uniforms for the 2014-2015 season in an effort to become the first sporting association to receive certification by the Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights.

“During the season 2014/2015, Kiruna IF will change their uniforms and make a stand by wearing rainbow-colored jerseys,” the club announced in a press release. “In addition to this gesture, the players will give talks in schools, as part of a collaboration with Kiruna Municipality, and participate in events which aim to increase the understanding and acceptance of people’s differences and similarities. By setting a good example, Kiruna IF want to prevent bullying and exclusion and create the best opportunities for all young people to play and love hockey.”

Portia De Rossi rehab rumors

Reports surfaced this week that Portia De Rossi checked into Passages Malibu, a rehab facility, for treatment for drug and alcohol issues in early May following an “ugly fight” with wife Ellen DeGeneres.

An unnamed source told In Touch magazine that “Portia hadn’t been happy for a while and was drinking and isolating [herself], and Ellen confronted her. Portia lost it and blamed Ellen for driving her to drink because of her controlling ways and said she wasn’t in love with her anymore. Ellen was crushed and screamed at Portia to get out.”

The source continued, “Ellen is domineering and Portia is passive,” and their marriage is full of “jealousy, lies, and fighting.” De Rossi “felt like a prisoner in her own home. She went from sipping white wine occasionally to drinking at least a bottle or more a day and topping it off with a pill.”

During De Rossi’s 30-day stay at Passages, DeGeneres reportedly visited her every weekend to offer her support and the couple are said to be working to save the marriage.

DeGeneres and De Rossi issued no formal statement to address the reports.

Burger King unveils Proud Whopper for San Francisco Pride

A Burger King in downtown San Francisco celebrated Pride with the Proud Whopper, a Whopper wrapped in a rainbow-colored wrapper inscribed with the message “We are all the same inside.”

“It showcases who we are as a brand,” says Fernando Machado, senior vice president of global brand management at Burger King. “It shows how we, as a brand, believe in self-expression.”

All Proud Whopper sandwich sales, Machado says, will be donated to the Burger King McLamore Foundation for scholarships benefiting LGBT high school seniors graduating in spring 2015.

According to USA Today, one gay rights activist says Burger King is doing the right thing. “Whenever a company comes out in support of gay people, it makes a difference,” says Jordan Bach, a consultant to corporations on gay rights issues and a GLAAD media partner. “But when it’s done right — when it’s done with a campaign that shows the company understands diversity and really believes in the profound acceptance of other people — that sort of marketing can change minds and hearts at the deepest level.”

Burger King was also a sponsor of this year’s San Francisco Pride celebration, marking the first time the company has sponsored a U.S.-based Pride parade.

Watch public reaction to the Proud Whopper in the Burger King video below.

San Francisco Pride can be overwhelming. It’s the largest Pride in the states, boasting about 500,000 attendees each year. There’s a lot going on in San Francisco during Pride weekend, so we’ll make it easy for you: Eden.

Eden is like a queer female pride within SF Pride, and Thursday, June 26, through Sunday, June 29, marks Eden’s 5th anniversary. You’ll be among 5,000 other queer women during the weekend-long event.

Last year, actress and Grammy-winning singer and rapper Eve performed at Eden. This year boasts more talented performers, as well as celesbians, top notch DJs, go-go dancers and hosts.

Thursday, June 26, at 9pm kicks off Eden weekend at the Supper Club. Lauren Bedford Russell from Showtime’s “The Real L Word” and MTV’s Brittney Duet from “Nick Cannon Presents: Wild N’ Out” will be hosting the fashion show turned DJ dance party. This event will be filmed for an up and coming reality show, and San Francisco native rapper and singer-songwriter Oh Blimey will be performing.

Friday marks the Eden All White Everything party at 9pm at The Factory with three dance rooms, a variety of DJs, go-go dancers, a photo booth and performances by pop-rapper and singer Colette Carr and emcee, poet and songwriter Aima the Dreamer. Jessica Clark of HBO’s “True Blood” and Nicole Conn’s “A Perfect Ending,” along with Ari Fitz of MTV’s “The Real World Ex-Plosion” will be hosting the evening, along with Rose Garcia from “The Real L Word” and Eden’s very own Mona Webb, the executive director of the EDEN LGBTQ Youth Foundation.

Watch Jessica Clark describe the weekend’s debauchery:

On Saturday, Eden is hosting their first ever, and only, Eden 5th Year Anniversary Party at 9pm at the Mezzanine. Clark, Fitz, Garcia and Webb will be hosting again, on top of the great music, go-gos and photo booth, there will also be body painting, a free champagne toast, a $1,000 balloon drop at midnight and Oakland native, neo-soul singer-songwriter Goapele, called the “spiritual love child of Sade and D’Angelo,” by Rolling Stone magazine, will be performing for your pleasure.

Sunday is the final party sendoff at the Parliament. The Eden After Pride Party is the only Oakland-based event (Oakland has the largest number of lesbians per capita in the United States) and will kick off at 7pm. This will be the time for you to woo the women you’ve been eyeing all weekend or to solidify your connections before you head back out into the real world.

You can purchase tickets to individual events, or you can buy passes. The All Access VIP Pass gets you in to all of the events, plus access to the Eden VIP Lounge, exclusive access to the celesbians and recording artists, complimentary hors d’oeuvres, private bar, private waitresses, VIP hosts, exclusive entrance so you don’t have to wait in line and photo ops with the celesbians, musical artists and models. Details.

If you’re a woman of a certain age, no doubt you’ve lived to tell this common tale. It’s a story of chasing after the “confused” girl who really seemed to love having you around — and even made out with you once or twice when no one was around — but who wouldn’t acknowledge you publicly when out with a group of friends.

Well, for those for whom the WNBA has been that “confused” girl, your tale of courtship (pun totally intended) just got its happy ending.

After 17 years of accepting our time, attention and consumer dollars while all the while peppering its television broadcasts with info-bites about its players’ husbands and children (“Hey, look everybody — our players are straight!”) and promoting the league as the summertime destination for male basketball fans and their young daughters, the WNBA finally walked right up to us yesterday and gave us a big wet kiss in front of everybody.

The overture came in the form of an announcement of WNBA Pride, presented by COVERGIRL (but after all these years of pining, I suppose we can forgive them for that), described in a press release as “a new national platform celebrating inclusion and equality, while combating anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) bias.”

“The WNBA welcomes all fans, athletes and partners to our game,” said WNBA President Laurel J. Richie. “These beliefs unite the 12 teams of the WNBA and we are very excited to introduce the WNBA Pride platform which celebrates acceptance and inclusion. The WNBA takes great pride in working with extraordinary partners who share these values, and we are so grateful to our presenting partner COVERGIRL along with ESPN, GLSEN and GLAAD for joining the WNBA on this important initiative.”

Acknowledging that a study commissioned in 2012 revealed that 25 percent of lesbians watch the WNBA’s televised broadcasts and that 21 percent have attended a game, the league confessed the error of its ways in miscalculating its fan base.

“We guessed very wrong on that,” said Rick Welts, who was executive vice president and chief marketing officer of the NBA when the WNBA first started in 1997, noting that the league’s executives had believed that the fan base would be a carry over from the NBA.

Over the years, the WNBA has done some promotion to the LGBT community locally, sponsoring pride events and hosting groups at games. But WNBA Pride is the first league-wide initiative aimed at attracting the LGBT crowd.

Openly gay WNBA superstar Brittney Griner of the Phoenix Mercury said, “I’m so glad we’re finally making a push to the LGBT community who is a strong supporter of the WNBA.” Griner plans to don rainbow-colored shoes throughout June in a show of support for the initiative.

So what will WNBA Pride entail? Well, it started with the launch of the WNBA Pride website on Wednesday and will continue with teams participating in local pride festivals and parades, working with advocacy groups to raise awareness of inclusion through grassroots events and advertising with lesbian media. All 12 teams will also have their own Pride initiative over the course of the season, and the league will sponsor the fifth annual LogoTV/AfterEllen Score Your Seats Sweepstakes, where fans will have the opportunity to win a trip to a WNBA Finals game.

The league will become the first to celebrate LGBT Pride on national television when the Tulsa Shock takes on the Chicago Sky on Sunday, June 22, at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN2. During the national game telecast, WNBA Pride will have a major presence, including the new WNBA Pride logo appearing in court-side signage and in-game promotions.

Other announced Pride games include:

Washington — 7/25/2014
Tulsa — 6/6/2014
Seattle — 6/22/2014
Phoenix — 6/20/2014
New York — 6/27/2014
Minnesota — 6/20/2014
Indiana — 6/11/2014
Chicago — 6/22/2014
Atlanta — 6/20/2014

The news is exciting, ladies, but as is always the case with matters of the heart, keep your eyes open and your wits about you until the object of your desire reveals her true intentions.

Boston Pride announced that Mary Lambert will be among the headliners performing Saturday, June 14, at Boston’s City Hall Plaza as part of the city’s Pride Festival.

Lambert shared the news with fans via video:

Lambert shot to fame after writing and singing the same-sex rights anthem, “Same Love,” with hip-hop duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. The revolutionary song touched millions, and Lambert performed it live at The Grammys, The MTV Video Music Awards, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” VH1 and “The Colbert Report.” “Same Love” sold over 1 million copies in the U.S. alone. Lambert recently released her newest single, “She Keeps Me Warm” and the music video tallied one million views in its first week.

Joining Lambert in headlining the Festival are A Great Big World, Alex Newell, JD Samson & Men and Jeanie Tracy.

“Boston Pride is excited to host these amazing musical headline acts this year,” said Sylvain Bruni, President of Boston Pride. “All of these artists’ stories and songs mirror our mission of inclusion and embracing diversity. We know that they will put on remarkable performances for Boston Pride and embody the spirit of this year’s theme — Be Yourself, Change the World.”
