If asked to describe comedian Suzanne Westenhoefer in just one word, some may go with “ground-breaking.” This would, of course, be accurate. After all, Westenhoefer was the first openly lesbian comic to host her own HBO Comedy Special (1994) and to appear on the “Late Show with David Letterman” (2003). But that one word could never do her justice.

Self-deprecating. Raw. Hilarious. Legendary. Unpredictable. Candid. (That last one is by her own admission — I found it on her website.) All these and more could also be used to describe Westenhoefer, who is brazenly honest, outspoken and spontaneous in her comedy.

Westenhoefer began her stand-up career on a dare and she carries that same risk-taking attitude with her every time she takes the stage. With countless hours of material honed over a  career spanning more than two decades and a penchant for spilling the beans about whatever is currently happening in her life at the moment, Westenhoefer offers up a unique comedy set adventure every time she takes the stage.

Westenhoefer will soon be appearing with fellow veteran comic Jennie McNulty at two benefit performances for the United Church of Christ Coalition for LGBT Concerns. The first performance will be Saturday, May 17, at First Congregational Church of Berkeley, California. Tickets are available through www.brownpapertickets.com. The second show will be held Sunday, May 18, at Peace United Church of Christ in Santa Cruz, California. Tickets can be purchased at www.ticketriver.com. VIP tickets are available at each event and include a meet and greet with both comedians and priority seating.

I managed to catch up with Westenhoefer long enough to get her to answer our Fast 5 questions this week.

1. What are you most looking forward to in 2014?

Touring with Miley Cyrus. It’s not official yet, but a girl can dream.

2. Phone call or text?

Please, I beg you, text!

3. What would be your best piece of relationship advice?

Each partner should have full access to the other person’s phone, email, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts. (We’re pretty sure there’s a great story behind Westenhoefer’s answer on this one, but we maintain a strict five-question policy, so there was no chance for follow up.)

4. What’s the last movie you went to the theater to see?

“Despicable Me 2” with one million toddlers.

5. If you could have one super power, what would you want it to be and why?

To fly, both for the fun of it and to give the big finger to the airlines that rule my life.

Be sure to check out Westenhoefer’s website and follow her on Facebook and Twitter.

Adding to the already impressive music lineup for the 28th annual Dinah Shore Weekend, Club Skirts announces a performance from acclaimed pop-rock artist Stephanie Rice, best known for her appearance on season 12 of NBC’s The Voice.

Stephanie Rice uses her music to share her powerful story of resilience through emotional, compelling performances. After coming out to her parents ten years ago, Rice found herself estranged, completely alone and unwanted. She bounced back, moved to Houston from her hometown of Texarkana, graduated with a degree in Biology at the University of Houston, and entered the professional medical field where she conducted groundbreaking research involving HIV.

Throughout Stephanie’s time as a scientist, she continued aspiring to share through songs her observation of life, love and pain. In 2016, she decided to commit to music full time, completing her debut album, Dear Misery with a band she formed and fronts, Colonial Blue. The album received regional praise, including being named one of the top 12 best albums by the Houston Chronicle.

After making it to the top 11 finalists of The Voice, Stephanie left the show empowered with validation and support from fans around the world, including her coach and mentor, Alicia Keys, who called Rice “the purest artist on this show… you are a producer, you are a musician, you play multiple instruments, you are a writer, you are exactly what an artist is supposed to be.”

Stephanie Rice will be performing Thursday, March 29 at Zelda’s Nightclub for the Official Dinah Opening Party.

Here’s a recap of The Dinah lineup:

JESSIE REYEZ

Jessie Reyez has been taking the music industry by storm since she first released her debut EP Kiddo, which was famously championed by Sir Elton John on Beats 1 Radio. The Colombian-Canadian singer/songwriter has since been on an unstoppable meteoric rise. She played the Governor’s Ball, her first New York festival and stunned audiences with a breathtaking performance of her heartbreak anthem “Figures” at the 2017 BET Awards. She appeared on Calvin Harris’ “Hard to Love”, and wrapped up a U.S. tour, which culminated back home in Toronto with a sold-out show at the Mod Club. The burgeoning singer accomplished another milestone when she made her late-night talk show debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last summer. Today, her star is still rising as she is sitting with a record deal from Island Records.

A pioneer in the fight against sexual harassment, Reyez made a lot of noise when she released the eye-opening song “Gatekeeper” and companion short film of the same title: a gut-wrenching, dark and uncomfortable 12 minute piece she co-wrote with director Peter Huang, narrates, and acts in. Released last April, the song has become newly resonant, standing as a precursor of the #Metoo movement. Reyez herself embodies the meaning of “living on your own terms” and “taking charge” and continues to blaze an inspiring trail for many young aspiring female artists to follow.

Jessie Reyez performs at the Sunday night Closing Party at Zelda’s Nightclub.

SNOW THA PRODUCT

Snow Tha Product, an MTV VMA award winning Latina lyricist and emcee with hip-hop, pop and R&B sensibilities, is exactly the rapper we need right now. The SoCal native, who records in both English and Spanish, has been involved in some pretty high-profile music collaborations, working with the likes of Ty Dolla $ign and Lin-Manuel Miranda on “Immigrants (We Get the Job Done)” from the Hamilton Mixtape.

A well known artist and influencer in the social media world, the Atlantic Records artist has a legion of loyal fans awaiting her new releases. When not working on music, she’s building up her acting credits, which includes a recurring role on USA Network’s “Queen of the South” as gang leader Lil’ Traviesa. She has been recognized and respected throughout the hip-hop industry for carving her own lane. Her reputation as a spitfire performer has her nonstop energy shows selling out from the West to East Coast.

Snow Tha Product hopes to one day become a role model for future generations and a voice for all Latinos. Making a whole lot of noise, Snow Tha Product is commanding the spotlight, and has everyone eagerly waiting to see what’s next at The Dinah.

Catch Snow Tha Product headlining The Dinah’s TGIDF Pool Party, March 30 at the Hilton Main Pool.

RAPSODY

Hailed as one of the most acclaimed MCs in American hip-hop today, 2018 double Grammy Nominee, Rapsody, is confirmed to take center stage at Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend.

The Snow Hill, NC native created more than a massive buzz at the close of 2017 with the release of her lyrically poetic solo album dubbed Lalia’s Wisdom. The smoldering album, in which she expertly spins out stories of love, resilience and female empowerment, features an impressive list of monster names including rap heavyweight Kendrick Lamar.

From her humble beginnings as part of a rap collective dubbed Kooley High to being discovered by award-winning producer Patrick “9th Wonder” Douthit in 2008, to trading verses with Kendrick Lamar on his Grammy-nominated album To Pimp a Butterfly, to Grammy Award nominations for her solo release, Rapsody’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary.

Joining a small exclusive group of artists, she had the privilege to be invited at the White House by former President Barack Obama and Herbie Hancock to perform at the International Jazz Fest.

“I want to be an artist that shows women that they do have a choice to be respected off their talent alone and not because of…looks or gender. The only thing that matters is that you are dope,” says the incredibly talented trailblazing artist.

She joins The Dinah 2018 line up as the perfect example of a powerful woman defining her career her way, on her terms.

Catch Rapsody at The Dinah’s April 1, Sunday Funday Pool Party, held at The Hilton Hotel in downtown Palm Springs.

BROOKE CANDYBrooke Candy

American rapper/vocalist/internet personality Brooke Candy grew up in the greater Los Angeles area, where she developed an early love of fashion and music. Candy whizzed into Internet fame with a raw, no-nonsense delivery, a penchant for dirty talk, and a string of outlandishly stylized, provocative music videos. She is notoriously known for her cameo appearance in Grimes’ hit single “Genesis,” which gained viral success, quickly racking up millions of views, and gained her a cult following online.

Inspired in part by 90’s rapper Lil’ Kim, Candy’s own musical career stands out with her uniquely blunt, irreverent sound and hyper-sexual, highly explicit songs presented in colorful videos. The provocative artist made a couple of guest appearances on Charlie XCX’s tracks including the singles “Cloud Aura” and “I Got It” featuring Cupcakke and Pablo Vittar.

She released her own Opulence EP in 2014. Throughout 2016 and 2017, she released a string of singles including pop hit “Living Out Loud” featuring mentor Sia, which went to #4 on the dance charts following a remix package.

The self-identified queer artist separated with her record label Sony RCA in 2017 in hopes of getting back to her punk inspired roots. Brooke has been hard at work shaping her solo career and showcasing her smooth flow and raunchy realness. Her next single is a collaboration with Lizzo, which will be followed by her second EP Who Cares, produced by MNDR, to be released in this spring on Wondersound Records.

Artists like Brooke Candy are now more than ever needed. She’s effervescent, charismatic and fearless and the freedom and enthusiasm she expresses is beyond contagious… she leaves you wanting more; it’s electrifying and undeniably best experienced live!

Brooke Candy will headline The Dinah’s Saturday Wet & Wild Pool Party at The Hilton Hotel in downtown Palm Springs.

MADAME GANDHI

Kiran Gandhi, known by her stage name as Madame Gandhi, is the voice of a new generation. “I want music to make feminism culturally relevant. I want my music to make gender equality culturally even more relevant,” says the young artist. A champion of sisterhood and female empowerment, Madame Gandhi practices what she preaches.

The musician and activist based in LA gained international recognition as the iconic free-bleeding runner at the 2015 London Marathon. Her choice caused a media frenzy, sparking a global viral conversation about how we treat menstruation in various cultures, combating period stigma around the world.

Gandhi grew up between New York City and Bombay, India, playing drums and attending The Chapin School. She currently holds degrees from Georgetown (Math, Political Science, Women’s Studies) and an MBA from Harvard Business School. While attending Georgetown, she also immersed herself in the vibrant DC music scene, once playing Bonnaroo as the drummer for the famed Thievery Corporation. Between 2011 and 2013, she worked at Interscope Records as their first ever digital analyst, studying patterns in Spotify and YouTube consumption behavior. In 2013, Gandhi linked up with Grammy-nominated artist M.I.A. and began touring internationally with her as her drummer.

In 2017, she released her solo EP Voices, which explores feminist ideals through spoken word, rap and electronica. Taking the world by storm, Madame Gandhi is on a meteoric rise. She recently opened for Ani DiFranco on her Rise Up tour, her SXSW performance was named one of SPIN Magazine’s favorite of the entire event, and she recently performed on an episode of Amazon’s new series “I Love Dick.”

She now continues to travel to perform and speak about modern gender equality, and is also working on her full-length album.

Madame Gandhi headlines The Dinah’s Friday night Pink Party at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

ARIANA AND THE ROSE

Ariana and the Rose writes, sings, and performs a coming-of-age story, one that resonates with current music lovers who seek communities where they can totally be themselves. Think a cosmic fusion of Kate Bush and Robyn: strong women of synth-pop and alternative rock, grandiose but grounded. Her honest synth driven songs have accumulated over 3.5 million streams and her vivid and experiential music videos have amassed over 2 million views.

Ariana’s breakthrough EP Retrograde features singles “Supercool” and “How Does That Make You Feel,” two synth anthems, celebrating the strength and duality of the female spirit, both tracks gaining notoriety and praise from outlets such as Vogue and Nylon. Ariana’s songwriting is also showcased on “Love You Lately” with electro-R&B duo RKCB. The heartbreak song has been supported by the likes of Noisey, applauding Ariana’s ability to “capture the sting of relationship disintegration.”

Ariana kicks off 2018 featuring on Feenixpawl & Harley Knox single “Bones” that will no doubt stake its claim as one of 2018’s most infectious pop-dance crossover anthems. While touring across the UK and the US supporting and sharing stages with artists such as Cyndi Lauper, Peaches, Jack Garratt, and Allie X, and performing at festivals including The Great Escape and SXSW, Ariana has been working on music and a show that truly represents herself.

Her unique brand of performance that transcends the traditional boundaries of a concert is truly showcased in Ariana and the Rose’s immersive live music party ‘’light + space,’’ a galactic multi-sensory disco. Nylon Mag captured Ariana’s galactic grandiosity when they said, “Pop culture craved a technicolored synth pop powerhouse in the making, and Ariana and the Rose dropped in from her special place in the cosmos to quench it.” Her purpose is clear: step into her starry universe, and leave your inhibitions at the door.

Ariana and the Rose perform Saturday’s Wet & Wild pool party at the Hilton Main Pool.

LOOK FOR “JENNY’S WEDDING” IN THEATERS NOW.

It’s rare that we see a film with lesbian characters in the theaters. The few times we do see a movie with a strong queer character on the big screen, we are moved because the opportunities to see that aspect of ourselves reflected on the big screen, an aspect that society had made taboo, are scarce. We feel empowered, or perhaps scared – maybe a sense of fulfillment and validation, or anger that a movie with a lesbian character making it into the theaters is still a big deal. And it is a big deal.

“Jenny’s Wedding” is a big deal, and not only does the film have a lesbian character, but lesbian leads. Katherine Heigl (“Gray’s Anatomy,” “Knocked Up”) is cast in the title role, and Alexis Bledel (“Gilmore Girls,” “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”) portrays her lesbian fiancé.

Katherine Heigl and Alexis Bledel

Katherine Heigl and Alexis Bledel (Photo courtesy of Tiffany Laufer)

“Jenny’s Wedding” is our exposure. It’s not a campy film. Being gay is a theme in the film, but it’s not the entire story. It’s humanizing – of everyone. It humanizes Jenny, a conventional woman from a conventional small town who is also a lesbian. She doesn’t want to stand out. She just wants to marry the woman she loves, start a family in her hometown and just be another town member among her neighbors.

There are no villains in this film. “Jenny’s Wedding” humanizes Jenny’s family. When Jenny comes out to them, they’re thrown into this new world that they hadn’t any exposure to previously. They’re more conventional than conservative. They’re not change makers. They prefer not to stand out, and Jenny coming out in their small town makes them stand out.

They’re hurt that Jenny had kept a part of herself a secret from them for so long. They struggle, not only with trying to accept this change, but also with how Jenny coming out is making them look at themselves, evaluate themselves and change themselves.

“Jenny’s Wedding” is a story about family, love, personal courage and stretching past one’s personal limits when confronted with something new. This film is a roadmap for families who are struggling with their kids coming out, and it’s a roadmap for families who are struggling to accept anything out of their comfort zone, not just their LGBTQ children.

When we go see “Jenny’s Wedding” in the theaters, it will move us. We’ll laugh. We’ll cry and we’ll be moved by seeing an aspect of ourselves portrayed on the big screen that at one point in our lives we had kept hidden, or perhaps that we still hide.

“Jenny’s Wedding” has a lot of Hollywood support, but it is an independent film. Mary Agnes Donoghue, the writer of “Beaches” and “White Oleander,” wrote, directed and produced “Jenny’s Wedding.” The film is loosely inspired by her niece coming out to her family. Michelle Manning, also the producer of the film, produced “Sixteen Candles” and “The Breakfast Club,” and worked with Paramount Pictures as senior vice president of production, and later as president of production. Gail Levin, again a producer, was the executive vice president of features casting at Paramount Pictures, and personally casted “Almost Famous,” “Jerry Maguire” and ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.”

Jenny's Wedding castThe film boasts an incredible ensemble cast as well. Golden Globe and Emmy winner and two-time Oscar nominated Tom Wilkinson plays Jenny’s father, Eddie. Linda Emond (“Across the Universe,” “Julie & Julia”) plays Jenny’s mother, Rose, and Grace Gummer (“Zero Hour,” “The Newsroom”) plays Jenny’s sister, Anne.

The film has been a passion project for everyone involved. Filming has wrapped and the project is now in post-production. It’s a low-budget film and the producers have launched an Indiegogo campaign to help fund the soundtrack, an integral element of any film.

The filmmakers are offering some very enticing campaign incentives: tickets to the Los Angeles and Cleveland screenings of the film; autographs from Katherine Heigl; the wedding dress from the film. Donations are tax-deductible thanks to their partnership with From the Heart Productions and a portion of each donation will be contributed to non-profit PFLAG Cleveland.

“Jenny’s Wedding” is a film that can change lives and through the Indiegogo campaign the community is being offered the opportunity to contribute to that change.

The 66th Primetime Emmy Award nominees were announced Thursday and the first season of the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black” earned a dozen nods, the most for any comedy.

Three episodes were honored with nods for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing, as well. The Outstanding Directing nomination was for Jodie Foster’s work on episode three, “Lesbian Request Denied,” and marks the second time she’s been nominated for an Emmy.

According to a Twitter announcement from “The View”, actress, comedian and talk show host Rosie O’Donnell will be returning to the show this fall. O’Donnell previously served as one of the show’s hosts during a nine-month stint on the 2006-2007 season.

While O’Donnell hasn’t officially responded to the report — she’s vacationing with her family in Florida — she did retweet a link to a story by Variety announcing her return.

O’Donnell’s prior engagement on the morning talk show was during its 10th season, one during which she often was at odds with conservative co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck who now works for the Fox News Channel as a co-host on “Fox and Friends.”

Hasselbeck broke from her own vacation to call in to Fox to express her displeasure with O’Donnell’s return, calling her former co-host someone who had “”spit on the face of military” and “spit in the face of her own network.”

Following the retirement of Barbara Walters last May and with both Jenny McCarthy and Sherri Shepherd slated to depart “The View” this summer, ABC still has two more seats to fill alongside O’Donnell and returning host Whoopi Goldberg.

Bridget McManusBY CANDY PARKER

I was lucky enough to meet Bridget McManus a couple of years ago on a cruise from Miami to the Bahamas. We shared a special moment (of hilarity) the very first evening as she hosted karaoke and I embarrassed myself by performing Rick Springfield’s “Jessie’s Girl.”

McManus, the energizer bunny of comedians (and karaoke hosts) faux battled me on stage for the affections of another cruise guest, an impromptu rendering which attempted to bring the 80s love triangle anthem to life in lesbian form.

While that moment on stage may have been the highlight of my entertainment career, McManus’ accomplishments have gone on to far outshine mine. The Los Angeles-based performer who once said that she “wanted to be a stand-up comedian since I was a fetus” is living her embryonic dream.

Perhaps best known to lesbian audiences for her Logo Network series “Bridget McManus Presents: That Time of the Month” and “Brunch with Bridget” and her Tellofilms mockumentary “McManusland,” McManus can now be seen daily on the “Queen Latifah Show,” doing the splits and inspiring laughter as only she can with her high-energy and provocative style.

In addition to her prodigious comedic skills, McManus is also a contributor at AfterEllen.com and a skilled painter.

As luck would have it, I was able to get the multi-talented McManus to put down the microphones and paint brushes long enough to play along with this week’s Fast 5.

1. Finish this sentence: “I think the key to being happy is…”

Having more peace in one’s life than stress.

2. If you had to give up one of the following for an entire year, which would you choose to live without: cell phone, television, hair products or chocolate?

Does this include shampoo? If not, then I’ll happily get rid of all other hair products ‘cuz I don’t really futz over my hair. I could probably get rid of TV, too, but don’t you dare touch my chocolate!

3. What’s the maximum number of cats you’d feel comfortable owning before worrying that the neighbors were starting to whisper, “There goes the cat lady?”

I’m allergic to cats but, since I am a lesbian and I’m married to a lesbian, I do live with one cat, which I refer to as my step-cat. But I’ll happily own 10 dogs and I don’t care what my neighbors think.

4. Early bird or night owl?

Neither. I’m a 10a.m. to 8p.m. kinda girl.

5. What’s your favorite home-cooked meal?

If my mom is cooking it’s manicotti with garlic bread. If my wife is cooking it’s scrambled eggs. I can’t make eggs so whenever she makes them for me it’s such a wonderful treat.

Albuquerque-born, Brooklyn-infused and Los Angeles-based comedian Dana Goldberg was destined for a career in comedy. The youngest child in a single-parent household featuring two gay children, Goldberg’s earliest review was from her Kindergarten teacher who proclaimed the youngster “the funniest five-year-year old I ever met.”

Now, over a decade into a comedy career which began in 2003, Goldberg continues to garner high praise from loftier authorities. In naming Goldberg one of the “Top Five Funniest Lesbians in America” Curve described her as “hot and hilarious … one of the brightest lights in a stellar comedy landscape.” The Los Angeles Times said Goldberg “is one of the greatest comics — sharp, funny, knows how to bob and weave with the audience.”

More than just a pretty face with the gift of comedic gab, Goldberg is a regular at HRC and AIDS awareness benefits and produces the annual Southwest Funny Fest in her hometown of Albuquerque, benefiting New Mexico AIDS Services. Shortly after the release of her latest comedy CD, “Crossing the Line” (autographed copies available here), I caught up with a then slightly under the weather Goldberg for this week’s Fast 5.

1. What’s your television viewing guilty pleasure?

“Law and Order.” I have a bit of a cold right now, and I’m going on episode four in a row. I need an intervention. It’s Mariska Hargitay’s fault.

2. Which celebrity would render you totally star struck if you were to meet him/her?

Charlize Theron. I may be able to form sentences when she has longer hair, but there’s something about the fauxhawk she was sporting for a while. I think I might just stare at her.

3. Do you have a hidden talent? Do tell!

I have been playing the drums since I was eight years old. It’s been a few years since I’ve played seriously, but I like to pick up the sticks when someone has a set at their house.

4. Lady Gaga or Madonna?

Madonna before the fake accent.

5. What would be your best piece of relationship advice?

Find someone who makes you laugh everyday, and try not to take anything personally.

Goldberg’s upcoming performances includes appearances in New Orleans (June 21), Portland (July 19), Laguna Beach (August 2) and Dallas (November 15). Stay up-to-date with Goldberg by visiting her website and following her on Facebook and Twitter.
