Seattle, Washington couple Brittany and Sally Pennington were captured on camera during their wedding last Sunday when the Grammys put on a mass ceremony during a performance of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis‘s “Same Love.” The track was up for Song of the Year, and had out lesbian vocalist Mary Lambert joined on stage by Queen Latifah and Madonna as is par for the course with the Grammys.  Brittany said she saw a casting call for the event on Craigslist, which said it was “looking for couples who wanted to get married at a huge event.”

“I sent in our info and they called us right away,” Brittany said. “That’s when we found out it was at the Grammys but they didn’t tell us anything else. It wasn’t until the day before the Grammys that we found out it was to ‘Same Love’ by Macklemore and that Queen Latifah and Madonna were involved also.”

This year’s Grammy Awards came to a monumental close when Macklemore and Ryan Lewis performed equality anthem “Same Love” before thirty-three couples were married in a mass wedding ceremony— including gay, straight, and transgender individuals—officiated by Queen Latifah. Macklemore started things off by taking the stage with Lewis, Trombone Shorty, and songstress Mary Lambert, who contributes the female vocal melody to the hit.

After Queen Latifah officiated, Madonna then joined those on stage to sing some of her 1986 hit “Open Your Heart.” Aside from the memorable performance, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis had an incredible night, taking home four Grammy awards.

Queen Latifah may presently appear full of smiles, but she hasn’t always been that way. The actress revealed in the January issue of Good Housekeeping that she used to be a heavy drinker after something tragic happened.

In 1995, Latifah was the victim of a carjacking that nearly left her friend dead from a gunshot wound. She coped with drinking.

It’s been a time of victories lately for the gay black community. President Barack Obama’s finally fully endorsed gay marriage, inciting words of support from Jay-Z, Chuck-D and Jesse Jackson.

Queen Latifah may want to get a revolving door for that closet of hers. Just two weeks after headlining at the Long Beach Pride festival the rapper-actress-singer is denying that remarks she made at the appearance constituted her coming out.

While on stage at the May 19 event, Latifah purportedly referred to the crowd as “her people” and asked, “Are you feeling the unity?” leading some to believe that she had officially come out. However, in an interview with “Entertainment Weekly” she asserts “that definitely wasn’t the case,” adding, “I’ve never dealt with the question of my personal life in public. It’s just not gonna happen.”

Apparently the 42-year-old performer was using the phrase “her people” in the most general sense, referring perhaps to southern Californians or the entire human race, rather than the predominantly gay and lesbian crowd to which she was speaking.

Though resistant to discuss her personal life Latifah hasn’t wavered in her willingness to accept a paycheck from – or, depending on one’s perspective, show her support for – the LGBT community. “To me, doing a gay pride show in one of the most fun things. My first show that paid more than $10,000 was in a gay club on New Year’s Eve in San Francisco.”

Suspicious fire at suburban Chicago gay club
A fire gutted the Velvet Rope Ultra Lounge destroying the Chicago suburb’s only gay bar. The cause of the fire has been deemed “suspicious” after anti-gay graffiti was found on the establishment’s charred walls.

Frank Elliot, owner of the Oak Park, IL bar, said that he was “shocked” by the fire that broke out around 6a.m. Sunday, saying he became suspicious after noting that the back door of the lounge had been kicked in and anti-gay graffiti scrawled on the walls, while a safe located in Elliot’s office was left untouched.

“My whole life, everything that I’ve worked for … my whole life is on the line and I don’t know what to think or even begin with,” Elliot told WGN.

Miley Cyrus tweets support
Miley Cyrus kicked off Pride season by once again demonstrating her support for the LGBT community, donning a “Homophobia is a social disease” button in a photo she posted on Twitter Saturday.

The 19-year-old singer and actress has been very vocal in her support of gay rights, having previously gotten a small “equals” sign tattooed on her middle finger and following up with an article she wrote for Glamour magazine explaining the move. “I believe every American should be allowed the same rights and civil liberties. Without legalized same-sex marriage, most of the time you cannot share the same health benefits, you are not considered next of kin and you are not granted the same securities as a heterosexual couple. How is this different than having someone sit in the back of the bus because of their skin color?”

Twitter was abuzz this week as series 2 as the Brits call it (season 2 here in the States) of the lesbian television drama “Lip Service” prepared to come to a close with the sixth and final episode airing May 25. No doubt the chatter will continue as fans await word regarding a decision on series 3.

Former “Queer Eye” guy outs fellow Food Network star
Things heated up in the kitchen this week as former “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” and current “Chopped” host Ted Allen appears to have spilled the les-beans in regard to fellow Food Network star Anne Burrell. Those in the know say Allen disclosed Burrell’s sexuality during an interview with Sirius XM’s Romaine Patterson set to air Monday, May 25.

Disneyland was indeed the happiest place on earth for one lesbian couple this week when they were granted permission to wed on the grounds of the Tokyo resort. Which of the Disney princess will be the first to come out of the castle?

Long live the Queen
The seemingly never-ending speculation about Queen Latifah’s sexual orientation may finally be put to rest as she headlines Long Beach Pride May 19 – 20. In related news, the sky is blue.
